What’s Included

FIO ITALIA’s 2025 season will feature five operas: La Bohème; Le nozze di Figaro; Il matrimonio segreto; Twenty-Four or, the Cure for Love; and a fifth work (to be announced) that will be performed in collaboration with the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini. Additionally, we will have an opera scenes program.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’re expanding our program offerings to welcome collaborative pianists, assistant directors, and assistant conductors. Click below to learn more.

    • Receive four weeks of intensive Italian language classes through Centro Studi Italiani.

    • Participate in career development seminars, with discussions of both United States and internationally-based work.

    • Study and collaborate with a brilliant international roster of artist affiliates and staff.

    • Program cost includes five weeks of housing (apartment-style) and transportation to and from the airport (see more details on our travel information page).

    • Two day trips:

    • Perform in fully staged productions (mainstage productions with orchestra; one-acts and scenes with piano).

      • Singers cast in the opera produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini’s will also be considered for their year-long Young Artist Program. Click here to learn more.

    • Receive eight 45-minute voice lessons.

    • Receive eight 30 min coaching sessions with Italian coaches.

    • Participate in at least one masterclass with our international faculty and guest artists.

    • We understand that deadlines for several major competitions and Young Artist Programs occur shortly after the end of FIO ITALIA. As much as possible, we will coordinate recording sessions for those who have a need. An additional pianist fee may apply.

    • Receive eight 30-minute coaching sessions with collaborative pianist Thiago de Freitas.

    • Receive additional masterclass session with the other collaborative piano faculty.

    • Each collaborative artist will be assigned an act from one of the mainstage operas.

    • Collaborate with singers in lessons, recitals, scenes, and aria recordings.

    • Shadow our conducting faculty in rehearsals and coachings.

    • Serve as chorusmaster for a mainstage production.

    • Receive weekly lessons with resident conductors.

    • One participant will be selected to conduct Il Matrimonio Segreto.

    • Assist the directors in our mainstage shows.

    • Stage direct for the opera scenes program.

    • Stage manage an assigned show.

    • Have the option to study Italian.

    • All interns will have an opportunity to observe the Pergolesi Spontini Festival.

    Assistant Directors will receive airfare, housing, and a small stipend.
